The Old Ones Have Told Us
The Old Ones have told us …
That we should come
with eyes wide as the plains
with hearts big as the sky
That we should come
humble like Brother Ant
wise like Brother Bear.
In the mist of our ancestors
we should come:
flesh of their flesh
bones of their bones
blood of their blood
we should come
In the echoes of their voices
in the trails of their songs
as breath of their essence
we should come
Mind of their mind
Great Spirit of their spirit
we should come.
Each blush of the rainbow
opacifying into solid color
is our relation:
The Rock People
the Standing Bark People
are relatives
The oceans and rivers
mountains and valleys are all kin
The Four-Legged, Winged
Crawling, Swimming
are sisters and brothers.
"Honor them as yourself"
say the Old Ones on the wind
"Every color, every shape
is the Great Mystery revealing Itself
"Come before the Mystery
in the Sacred Way
in the sacred manner—
with quieting of the ego
with purity of the heart—
and give reverence.
"At dawn
when the sun awakens Mother
give reverence
"At twilight
when the moon puts her to sleep
give reverence
"In the smile of her bright skies
give reverence
“In the frown of her dark clouds
give reverence.
"In the outpouring of revelation
give reverence
"In the holding of secrets
give reverence …”
Covenants told under the breath
for ears only that can hear
the whispering of the way inside the way—
the calling out of the inside out
of Owl's hoot
of Raven's caw
of Eagle's shriek.
“Come this way,
with summer's rains
smelling of forest and sod
"Come this way,
with autumn's breezes
fevering with gold and red
"Come this way,
with winter's snows
freezing-white with reminiscence
"Come this way,
with spring's blossoms
bursting of color and scents.
“Come this way
like the river of a baby's breath
flowing deeply, steadily
against the drumming of its mother's heart."
The Old Ones have told us.
