Fly-bitten Arrogance
So 1Brennan knows absolutely that all people who include meat in their diet are "lazy, selfish, and cruel. Brennan knows absolutely that, despite the fact that no culture, down through history, has been "absolutely" vegetarian, there is a divinely ordained moral injunction against eating meat. Despite the fact that, after decades of anecdotal and scientific observation of inveterate vegetarians, it has been documented that they (vegetarians) age more rapidly and suffer the same health- debilitating ailments that inflict the rest of humankind, Brennan knows the "stamp of God approval" accompanies every vegetarian morsel that parts his lips. Because he evidently "talks to God," he assumes that even though vegetarianism does not lead to a longer and healthier life; even though current science has dispelled the notion of plants supplying the enzymes necessary to digest them (in fact, their enzymes are metabolic, not digestive [the purpose of which is to perpetuate the plant, not us eating them]), the all-wise Brennan knows he is above the spiritual rabble that has yet to rise above their troglodytic ways.
Traditional, land-based people, since time immemorial, have reconciled the seeming disparity of species equality of life with the sacrifice thereof—experientially proving the necessity of such sacrifice for optimum continuation—by prayer, propitiation and permission. Being obviously self-annointedly superior, because his personal spirituality-taste runs toward vegetarianism, he posits "divine rights" in concluding the sanguinary lust of those whose conversations with "God" run in a different direction. Supposing his own greater receptivity and devoutness to "Creator's" ultimate instructions.
It is laudable to be committed to eradicating animal suffering. It is justified and warranted to censure affectations of "humane slaughtering" or, for that matter, to take issue with applying such descriptor for slaughtering animals. But declaring himself above and beyond the spiritual evolution of those whose recognition of the contradictory nature of this realm, of this "vibrational" dimension, of this cosmic dream—in which all but those not recreating it moment to moment are trapped (that is, independently traversing through it—in the world but not of it)— is the epitome of a fly-bitten arrogance in denial of its own ordinariness.
