Out to Sea Too Long

Monday, July 15, 2019 8:12 AM

"Trump’s tweets on Sunday morning [July 14, 2019] were sent before he headed to his golf club in Sterling, Va.” [Washington Post]:

"So interesting to see ‘Progressive’ Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run.

“Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they [sic] came."?  “Then come back and show us how it is done.”

Instead of wasting time, pushing back about Trump's own chain migration to American citizenship, why don’t we focus on how he has aptly described his own Trump government in his tweet storm, that is “a complete and total catastrophe”; that is "the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world”; that characterizes his interrogative “(if they even have a functioning government at all)”.

The die is cast. The fight is joined. This is a fight to save our country, our democracy, our republic. It’s not just with Trump—his replacing. It is with all he represents as a cultural force and national identity. He and his supporters are arrayed against that fundamental founding principle of our country, to exist as a democratic nation—giving equal rights, recognition, and protection under the law. If you think it’s anything less than a fight to preserve these core values, then you’ve been out to sea too long. Time to come to shore and get some footing in reality. It’s not about you and your personal story of discontent, of why you want government in or out of your life—in your own way, at your own convenience, in your own time. It’s about losing it all to despotic government for the few, a mutation from the ideal of united, common dedication to equality and justice. The words to that end mean nothing, if we don’t back them up with personal behavior and action.

Trump and ilk have dismantled American democracy to the point of near non-existence. And still his minions demand more of the same, in some skewed disaffection for all things liberal, when by definition liberal means tolerance, honoring our individuality by sameness of fair treatment. The cornerstones of American democracy, if you will. But in their echo chamber of “alternative facts,” “justice” means just us. It is the latter reconstruction by which Trump engages and mobilizes them by demagogic baiting and fearmongering. They won’t be turned; they won’t be persuaded. Regardless of their arguments pointing to jobs, immigration, right to life, etc., it’s about white entitlement, about losing their place in any advancement toward the “more perfect union” alluded to in the U.S. Constitution. Funny how these self-acclaimed Constitutionalists/Nationalists have no constitution for equality. And therein is the rub, liberals of all persuasions. If you are selectively liberal when it comes to a few choice dogmatic subjects, divorcing yourselves from the collective needs of the “great unwashed,” then your liberal practice is another form of just us

Time to come together, America. This is a fight for life. This is a battle for survival from this manic attack on our country and its liberties. We are in a war for our national identity from which all these liberties flow. No one is immune. Being above the fray in your spirituality will not shield your corporeal selves, no matter your belief persuasion. The history of the world has shouted this undeniably from every dark age and period. The time is now. Drop your sanctimony. It doesn’t win the day. Unity does.

FIGHT!
