On Tyranny

Friday, September 27, 2019 7:44 PM

1. The democratic vision of the United States is not indomitable. By examining how European democracies became fascist or communist, we can potentially understand the threats to liberty that exist in the contemporary moment.

2. If citizens swiftly comply with a tyrannical regime’s new rules, the regime will be emboldened.

3. All citizens must have the right of representation, and balloting must be secure to prevent a one-party system from taking hold.

4. A tyrant will use imagery to convince people that their neighbors are less worthy of respect and protection, as Hitler used yellow stars to differentiate Jews from the rest of the population. People should resist such images and remove them where they crop up.

5. In Nazi Germany and Stalinist Russia, tyrants co-opted the police and used them to incite terror and remove opposition. Police officers should be willing to disobey orders to prevent atrocities from taking place.
